Meet Me at the Station

mural across from train station in Puyallup, WA

There is something about a train station that brings to mind a great story.

An Epic Novel...

Or a Sweeping Historical Drama.

Great departures and surprise arrivals.

(One of my favorites is in the movie 'Out of Africa' with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford)

Intrique.

Adventure.

You can walk through these gates with a one way ticket.

'She's got a ticket to ride - but she don't care'.
The Beatles

You can hop on a train towards a new horizon.

You can take that first step outta here.

Start a new life in a new place.

Liberty!

And ride away on a pretty blue bicycle.

Or you could simply stay right where you are.

Because that's the place you want to be.

  2. A agree....railway stations present so many possibilities! They are always in my favorites books. Nicely written...I can see why you write a column for the paper...you are very talented.

  3. You write the best photo stories.
Do you think of the story first...
or just take photos and make the story later?
    Because they are always cohesive
and have beginnings, middles, and ends.
    Love your stories.

  4. This is so true - and how apropos that you post this now. I just spent a beautiful day with a friend whose apartment overlooks a train station. It was fun to imagine the different scenarios of each traveler.

My favorite train memory is putting pennies on the train track outside my grandmother's house then waiting for the train to flatten them.

Beautiful pictures - beautiful words! <3

  5. Oh, Thank you, for your very kind and encouraging comments!

As far as writing with photos, I sometimes think of a subject and then take the photos, and sometimes the photos just speak for themselves. I simply let my mind wander a bit and let the story write itself. xx

  6. Wonderful! As Deb and others have said, your stories are so cohesive. I won't see a railway station in quite the same way again! That one is very pretty.

  7. Dearest Karen,

That was a great travel of imaginations... Yes, Pieter and I have been at many train stations of the world. Not always easy hopping on and off with suitcases and carry on. But we managed. Got robbed only ones, while getting on the straps of my carry on got cut and purse snatched. Miserable day but part of life too.
Hugs to you and enjoy the new week.

  10. A charming train station. Yes, the train station is very poetic, full of possibilities and it's also a witness to happy and sad life moments. Actually, I wrote a similar post last summer http://polonicahomeagain.blogspot.com/2011/07/travels-thoughts-at-train-station-w.html .
    Have a lovely day, Karen.
