Keeping Summer

I've been taking lovely walks in the late afternoon sunshine.

Dry leaves crunch beneath my feet.

The air is warm and still.

The late summer fields are full of golden flowers.

Mimicking the late afternoon sun.

Another lovely summer comes to a beautiful close.

Blackberries ripen in the languid air, nature's bounty free for the taking.

Filling my pail becomes a daily ritual in anticipation of cobblers, pies and tarts.

Watchful eyes peer from the shadows, hoping my browsings rustle up a meal.

Can you see my little friend?

Sculptural seed pods replace summer's beauty.

Hummingbirds sip nectar from the last of the season's flowers.

Swallows gather in the late summer skies, garnering strength for their long migration soon to come.

And as the sun sets on another beautiful day, I savor these moments in time, keeping them locked away to open up once again when the summer sun is but a distant memory.

What is your favorite memory of summer?

  2. Your post SO speaks to me... late afternoon summer sunshine, picking black berries, crunchy leaves! And yes, I did see the little pair of eyes peeping out! Thank you for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #48!

  3. Well, Karen....my favorite summer memory this year is flying across the ocean to get home to my daughter.

The reality of summer in Louisiana, though, is that it is as brutal as a northern winter, so I never mourn its passing down here. I'm always happy to welcome autumn. <3

  4. Oh I love the frog (toad?) peeping out at you! And the hummingbird... I'm surprised you still have swallows there. They're usually gone from Aberdeen by about the 20th of August or so. Maybe they have farther to fly?

My favourite summer memory from this summer has to be the afternoon we spent on Holy Island in Northumberland. I've gone back there in my mind quite a few times since!

Enjoy the last of the summer.
