Traditions

As I put the finishing touches on my Holiday Decorating, my thoughts turn to those that are the Keeper's of Tradition.

This is usually done in the home by women. Now I am not saying that there are not men out there who get involved, I am just saying that this is primarily something that women lay claim to.

The Directors, so to speak.

This is no easy task. Oh sure, some women can pull it off with no worries. But for the rest of us, there is stress involved.

Because we are in charge of Making the Memories.

That is a lot of responsibility.

Especially at this time of year.

There is so much to do. The decorating, the baking, the shopping and wrapping. Being a hostess, cook, housekeeper, decorator and personal shopper on top of all the other responsibilities. And don't forget the Christmas Cards.

While also juggling being a Mother,Wife, Sister, Daughter, Grandmother, Friend, Employee, .......the list goes on.

Some of us include all of those in our description.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming.

And on top of it all, we are expected to be sweet, generous, loving, and of course beautiful. In other words Perfect.

I say, Bah Humbug!

Are we not the most amazing of creatures? If it wasn't for us, keeper's of the flame, keeper's of the hearth, keeper's of the home fires burning, there would be no Holiday Celebrations.

For that, I think we need our own Holiday.

What would we call it?

The Festivus for the Rest-of-us?
The 'I don't want to do another thing' Day?
How about, 'Wonderful Woman' Day!!

For women truly are wonderful. Whether we are the single gal working extra hours for the Mother's who have sick kids, the woman sitting bedside caring for a sick loved one, the woman lending a sympathetic ear to a troubled friend or family member, the woman giving what little she has to charity, we are all of these women.

We are the nurturer's, the giver's, the comfort bearer's.

It's time we recognize ourselves for the truly amazing people we are.

So as we rush around this Holiday Season, in our quest to Make Memories for all of our Loved Ones,

Remember how truly special you are.

And remember all of the other truly special women in this world.
For we are the Keeper's of Tradition.
Without us, the world would be a very bleak place.
We are the Sparkle, the Twinkle, the Glittering Beauty of the Holidays.

Give yourself a pat on the back.
And tell a woman you know, just how much you appreciate her.

And......

  1. You're so right about how this falls mostly to women (although I saw an interview with Kelsey Grammar who said he took over organising Christmas from his grandfather when he was a teenager). But there IS a festival for women, "Women's Christmas" or Nollaig nam mBan in Irish. It's celebrated on Epiphany (Jan. 6th). Women have the day off housework and visit with one another, drinking tea and eating cakes apparently!

Diary of a Country Wife blogged about it here: http://diaryofacountrywife.wordpress.com/?s=nollaig

  2. Oh my goodness, Christine, I love that festival; Women's Christmas! How I was never aware of that is beyond me, as I am half Irish and the ancestors on Hubby's and my Irish sides both come from County Cork! Of course, they would be the male sides and maybe that explains it! I read the blog post that you linked here from 'Diary of a Country Wife' and it just felt so familiar, as a lot of the Irish Customs have come down through my family. Thank you for sharing, and maybe I will have to resurrect that tradition with my family. xx
