A Country Drive with Good Fences

Spring has arrived here in western Washington State
with early flowering trees, green grass, and daffodils.

Spring also brings unsettled skies
so come along with me as we dodge the raindrops
for a country drive in the farmlands near my foothills home.

We start our journey by following the well-worn
track past the lawn and up the driveway.

You can see scattered white blossoms of
early plum lighting up the woodlands.

We reach the gate to see the first daffodils blooming,
and beyond that, if you look really close above
the left hand corner of the gate - forsythia.

The ground is carpeted with last fall's Black Cottonwood leaves.

As we come down from the foothills and reach the plateau,
we come into beautiful farmland.

Here we see budding purple plum in front of
a cheerful farmhouse with bright white accents.

I am guessing that the trampoline under the balcony roof
is being protected from the rain.

Love the picnic tables.

Big and little matching barns <3

A beautiful silhouette of Black Cottonwood shows
it's majestic size. A flowering tree is dwarfed below.

Split cedar fencing frames the view.

Last fall's grasses cling to barbed wire fencing
 as fields green up beyond.

The home with the green metal roof is a log home.

Our native Douglas Fir fringe the skyline.

More green roofing graces a vintage barn.

Sprawling outbuildings clutter the barnyard.

Neat fencing and 'cow crossing' sign
announce this dairy farm.

One of the very few dairies still operating
on the plateau.

A wooden swing above a lovely rock garden
provides sweeping views of beautiful farmland.

Lovely Heather - my daughter's namesake.

Handsome fencing under lovely trees.

Love the driveway that splits for the large
Western Red Cedar.

Scattered raindrops scamper across the view.

Green grass pushing through the old by a charming barn.
as the rain streams down.

A sudden gust of wind.....

A long drive lined with flowering plum.

White electrical fencing form temporary paddocks
for foraging livestock out of view.

Snow and Canadian Geese forage in a fallow pumpkin field.

Mt. Rainier peeks over the treeline
as we turn and head for home.

As the sun drops below the clouds,
late afternoon sunlight skims the fields.

A favorite vintage farm, still looking winter-like,
but with a hint of green.

Purple Plum line the road coming into town.

A log cabin, camp bunk building,
look-out tower and log skidder are part of
the historical museum in this old logging town.

Home Sweet Home.

Thank you for coming along, Dear Friends!

I hope there are some sweet signs of spring
wherever you are, although I know some of
you are still in the throes of winter and some are
just coming into Autumn in the southern hemisphere.

All seasons have their beauty,
if you have the eyes to see.

xoxo

  8. Liebe Karen,

  9. Thank you for the tour around your area. I've enjoyed seeing the wide open spaces, the farms and farmland. The barns must be typical of your area and the scenery so different from where I live. It was lovely to come back to your home in the woods as I love woodland and trees. It really feels like 'coming home' now that I've got to know you and your surroundings dear Karen.

  10. Such a beautiful drive through the area surrounding your home Karen. You have the best view of all, right from your own house! How nice to have all the flowering trees in bloom. We have another 2 months to go before we can enjoy that. But we did have 70 degree weather on Tuesday. Wonderful to let the house air out!

  19. Karen,

These are such beautiful photos, each and every one offering a different view of early spring in your area. My favorite is the one with the heather (and such a pretty name for your daughter). I don't think I've ever seen a picture of it much less the real deal! How cool!

Thank you for your visit today and your great info on Vancouver for our upcoming visit. I can only imagine how nice it would be to have just a few hours drive. And it sounds like your kids had a great time in Whistler recently! My son hikes and he is planning to explore the whole Pacific coast next summer. He is the one who suggested we visit Victoria and Whistler. We were in Vancouver about 10 years ago for my brother in law's wedding but we didn't have a lot of time to explore. I'm so looking forward to some 'down time'! Again, thank you and I want to say how happy I am to have met you!! :D

  24. I so enjoyed my journey and all the splendid scenery.
Strange to see double yellow lines in the middle of the road. Here in the UK we have double yellow lines on the sides of the roads and it means no parking at any time.
It really gives you a boost when the trees bud and blossom. It always seems like a very long winter.
Have a wonderful weekend, hugs from Prunella :)
