Blackberry Smoothie

Living in the Pacific Northwest with it's abundance of blackberries, I am always looking for ways to use them  in my recipes.

And with The Mr. home with the flu this week, I wanted to make sure he is getting plenty of healthy meals and snacks to speed his recovery.

So I whipped up a couple of Blackberry Smoothies from the berries I picked last fall. Frozen berries make wonderful additions to smoothies, whether they are blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries.

Whatever you have on hand.

I just found this pottery colander and handled bowl at my local thrift shop for a song! I have been looking for a berry colander for quite a while and this one was so pretty, I couldn't believe my good fortune! They were two separate pieces that probably didn't belong together, but once I got them home I realized they fit together perfectly.

I froze about 8 quarts of blackberries last fall just from the berries growing around my property.

And I had the scratches to prove it!

All you need to make this smoothie are a few simple ingredients you probably already have on hand.

My hand painted French Quimper-ware honey pot was a gift from my Dear Mother the first year we moved  here. 32 years ago!

She loved all things French and decorated her kitchen French Provincial style.

I made the applique' berry basket wall hanging many years ago. I also made one for my Mom. Now I have it hanging on the same wall, as they are slightly different.

She loved my handmade creations.

I loved making them for her.

This smoothie is so easy to make.

For each one, add to a blender:

1 ripe banana
1 cup of low fat yogurt ( I used Vanilla)
1/2 cup frozen berries (or more if you like)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp honey

Simply blend until smooth!

Full of healthy ingredients and delicious, too!

I found this hand illustrated cookbook at the thrift store, too!

It's virtually a work of art!

I can't wait to try some of the recipes.

But in the meantime, I have one sick Husband to attend to.

Do you harvest your own berries?

Do you collect cookbooks?

I hope you enjoy my Blackberry Smoothie.

Thank you for stopping by!

  3. Thanks for the recipe. I don't make smoothies very often, but should! We don't have blackberries on our property, but we do have lots of raspberries. I guess they could be used the same way.
Your berry applique hangings are very nice, as is that book you found. You hit the jackpot at the thrift store!

  4. Mmmmm, love blackberries, not the Himalayan berries (the big seeded ones) but the tiny native berries that trail along sunny banks and slopes. You know the ones you have to pick all afternoon to get enough for a pie a a couple pints of jam... BTW I love your vintage stove..

  7. The smoothie looks delicious! I am craving one now. I don't have any berries at my place but last summer when the blueberries were so cheap I bought boxes and boxes of them to freeze.

  8. Good evening, Karen.
I'm so sorry your husband is sick with the flu. It can be bad, but let's hope he has a mild case and that you don't catch it. I remember nursing my husband through swine flu a couple of years ago. He was so sick, but I never caught it. Had some left-over immunity from a 1976 swine flu shot.
Hope he was able to enjoy the smoothie. Boy, that looks good. And I ADORE the pictures in the cookbook. Big fan of botanical prints and such.

  9. That berry colander is soooo cute! I really like it. One Christmas my husband got me a really cute berry bowl made by a local artist and I broke it! I felt so horrible, but he fixed it with crazy glue. Now we just use it for our keys and wallets haha.

Your smoothie looks so delicious! I love how brightly colored blueberry smoothies are. The color alone can perk you right up!

  10. We also pick the local blackberries when we can - and buy raspberries, strawberries and blueberries from the local growers. It is wonderful to live among so many berry fields.

  11. Wonderful. Last weekend I did my first strawberry smoothie of this year. At the begining of the season strawberries are very expensive, so I buy a few and mix them with yogurt and milk, delicious.

  13. Dearest Karen,
Wish we still could collect blackberries here. In the 80's we could but they're gone. We grew our own too but with the birds and squirrels eating them ALL and me getting so scratched up from weeding the berry patch (raspberry and blackberry), we did away with them. LOVE to eat them and when I was in my 20's and 30's and still addicted to vanilla ice cream I ate that with blackberries... Guess that is close to being in heaven!
Your patchwork looks so realistic like real blackberries. What a labor of love and so glad you got the one from your Mother too.
You have loving hands, aside from a big loving heart!
    Hugs to you,
    Mariette

  16. So sorry that the Mr. has the flu! I wish he had gotten the flu shot....maybe next year.

I love to pick blackberries down here, but they come to fruition in May. I have a great recipe for pie that I'm going to post this summer.

Give my best to the Mr. <3

  17. That smoothie looks so yummy! I'm so sorry Dad is sick. When I was little I loved when I got to stay home sick because I had all of your attention and you spoiled me with hot tea that had lots of milk in it and toast with cinnamon and sugar. You are such a wonderful Mom and Dad is so lucky to have you caring for him. Hugs & Kisses ~H~
