Vintage Spools and Treasured Trims

On my recent trip to New England, my sweet Sis-in-law
gifted me with some special vintage gifts.

Vintage Sewing Spools were some of the treasures.

Aren't they great? I love the patina.

I have no idea exactly what they were used for,
but I know what I will use them for.....
but I will get to that....

The vintage basket was one of my very first
antique purchases as a new bride.

I have always loved baskets.

Sweet Sis added this little star...
she knows I love to sew.

I found these charming vintage photos
at a flea market recently.

They are the same little girl and backed by
heavy card.

I had ideas on how I would use these, too.....

Whenever I go thrifting, I am always on the look-out
for vintage calico fabrics.

These bring back sweet memories of my Grandmother's
dresses, aprons and quilts.

Vintage laces and trims are always on my list, too.

What to do with all this bounty?

Put it all to good use!

I have been looking for a project or two
to keep me busy during the long dark days ahead.

So I tore the calico fabric into 3/4 inch strips,
wrapped them around the spools,
and started crocheting.

I have wanted to make a crocheted basket
to keep my needlework in - something
soft and pretty and quick to work up.

I will share the finished basket in a future post.

The precious vintage photos are perfect
as 'lace holder cards'.

With Christmas just around the corner,
I foresee many happy hours of
rag crochet.

First on my list - my Sweet Sis-in-law.

Thanks Sis! I love the thoughtful gifts!

She also gave me this charming little message <3
xoxo

Thank you, sweet friends, for all of your
kind Birthday wishes!

It made me feel very blessed!

xoxo

  1. I like your treasures. I look for old tablecloths. A few years ago my sis and I were going thru antique stores in Chehalis. I saw a couple old photos of nicely dressed people. I almost bought them, now I wish I had. Not sure what t do with them but they would have had a house, not shelf in an antique. I like your dried hydrangeas. I have some but haven't moved them from the garage. They will look nice in one of my crocks from a long time ago. My mom used them to make sauerkraut. Blessings!

  10. I have wanted to try my hand and making plarn (plastic yarn) from grocery bags. I don't know if my hands are up to it, but I saw someone on the net crochets plan sleeping mats for the homeless. I would like to do that. Again, if my hands will cooperate!

Another lovely post from you, dear one. Lately have only enough energy for Wordless Wednesday and Six Word Friday. But folks seem to like me just the same. ;) m (& jb, of course)

  18. What wonderful finds, Karen. I love those old spools. I had several and sent them to my girlfriend that collects them. I love your idea of crocheting a basket. My gramma and mom had lots of calico materials, too. When I was a kid the chicken "mash" came in bags made of calico. My mother would go to the feed store and pick out the bags she wanted. All of her aprons and some of my clothes were made from those bags..and the small pieces were used for quilts.

Those are great old pictures, too. xo Diana

  19. Dear Karen, love your vintage treasures here! I love to go to flea markets at weekends and look for things - so fun to do something creative with them. Your crocheting project is great! I wish you a happy Halloween - for us, it'll be a rather quiet one too, because my kids are in other towns now studying. But hubby and i will light a fire and make a wish, while eating pumpkin soup! xx

  28. Dear Karen, the old sewing spools are quite fascinating! I have never seen anything like them. I love the photo of the sofa in front of the big windows with the view into nature. Totally could see me plopping down there with a cup of tea and just enjoying a quite moment. The beautiful little table in the foreground to the left would fit right into my house, too ;-)! Your post reminded me to go to a thrift store as well. I haven't done it for months and it can be so much fun.
Enjoy your crocheting project I would love to see the finished basket.
Wishing you a nice rest of the weekend!
