A Sad Goodbye to Our Precious Peanut

We lost our precious Peanut last Tuesday,
to a sudden illness and our hearts are broken once more.

Those of you who have followed my blog for a while
know that Peanut was my daughter, Jennie's little
mini-dachshund, along with her 'sister' dog, Weenie Baby.

These were my daughter's 'babies' and my
'Grand-pups' for 11 years.

My daughter is beyond heart-broken.
The vet said she died of a tick-borne illness
that could have been dormant for a long time,
 with devastating results.
Heroic measures were taken to save her,
but it was not to be, and now
a bright, shining light has gone out of our lives.

Peanut and Weenie-Baby have been inseparable since
they were 8 week old puppies, and now poor little
Weenie-Baby is left on her own.

I have taken her in and with lots of love and sympathy,
she is finding her way.
She has been grieving, and it shows in her
big brown eyes how sad she is feeling.

Here they are as puppies - Peanut in front - 11 years ago.

They were truly part of our big, extended family.

On an autumn walk with my old girl,
Little Bear (who has since passed on),
Whitey Bear when he was young,
and Peanut and Weenie-Baby leading the pack,
barely visible among the fallen leaves.

A visit to 'Gramma's House' was a wonderful adventure
for them and when my daughter would say,
'Want to go to Gramma's?'
 excited squeals would ensue.

Here she is with Whitey Bear,
Champ - our departed Border Collie,
and Sissy, on one of our many morning walks to retrieve the newspaper.

Yes, I have had to say a sad goodbye, too many times,
in the last few years.

And more recently, romps with our young dog, Kai.

I would frequently pet-sit, sometimes for extended periods
when Jennie was traveling or in between moves.
She has since bought a little cottage with a big yard
just for her little friends.

But now she cannot bear to leave
Weenie-Baby by herself all day, as she lives alone
and works long hours.

Over the years we've had many adventures together.
Whenever they would be my house-guests, they loved
helping me in the garden :)

Mention the word, 'Squirrel' and Peanut was on high alert!

As tiny as she was, Peanut ruled the roost around here,
and no other dog dared to cross her.
She was 'Queen Bee'.

But when it came to people, Peanut loved us all.
She was happiest when she was sitting in your lap
and able to gaze 'deep into your eyes' to let you
know how much she loved you.

And when you least expected it, she would get you with
a big sloppy kiss.

Although she was tiny, she was such a big presence
in all of our lives.

We're going to miss you so much, our Precious Little Peanut.

You stole our hearts and you most certainly captured mine.

Now I must try to stitch together the pieces of my tattered patchwork heart.

xoxo

I am sorry that I have been absent my Dear Friends,
but I know that you understand.

xoxo

  1. Aw Karen, I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand how attached you get to your grand-dogs and cats, too. They are just like our own. And, of course, you have the added grief of seeing your daughter have to deal with her loss. It's just so sad. Your daughter needs to remind herself of the wonderful home she gave her and the unconditional love all her life. I'm sending a hug to all and pray that little Weenie Baby recovers soon and can carry on ok without her friend. Deb

  3. Our pets are so precious We experienced a sequence of pet losses a few years ago--several that were of a similar age. The passings leave a big hole in our daily routine.

  18. I am so sorry to hear this. Our family has also gone through this before (a few times) and it is always a heart breaking time for all.

I hope you and your family are comforted in knowing that she had a good life and was loved immensely. So many animals are deprived of both!

When the heart break starts to ease, I hope you will consider another companion. Your family are responsible pet owners, and so many good animals are needing a loving, forever home.

Once again, wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Hugs from Marilyn (in Dallas)and from our fur-kids (Rusty, Jake, Sparky and Mugsy)

  22. Oh such sadness! I am so sorry for all of you. It is never easy to lose a sweet, innocent pet. My daughter is always afraid of ticks on her dog because they live in the woods. You just never know what is going to take our sweet pets from us.

  26. OH Karen! I'm so sorry for your loss - and please give your daughter my sympathies too. You have had to say good-bye to sweet furry Lovies far too many times lately. They are as much part of the family as anybody. I know we prepare ourselves for less time with them than a human family member- but it doesn't hurt any less. I hope you have comfort in believing, as I do, that there is a rainbow bridge where we get to see those sweet little souls again one day.
Prayers and hugs to you. xoxo

  27. It's always so so sad to lose a treasured pet! We have had dauschunds in the past and loved them, but went on to own an English Springer Spaniel and much later a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They were all such special friends. We had cats too that we were very close to. We want to get another dog as we have not had one in six years (or any animal) and we miss having that kind of dear and wonderful companionship and unconditional love. My condolences to all of you!

  29. This broke my heart Karen. I'm so very, very sorrry. There are few things sadder than saying goodbye to our fur babies. They are such a bright light in our lives.

I have a granddog too that is my daughters 'baby', and I dread the day when he will have to leave us. I know it will be beyond difficult. Those that have never gone through it can't truly understand. They are family!

My deepest condolences to you and your daughter. Peanut was a love, and have faith that someday you will see that precious face again and you'll never again have to say goodbye.

  30. I can feel your pain and it has made me cry!
I loved the photos of you passed away little fellow, she was lovely creature made to spread love .she warmed you with her love for 11 years which is long time to develop a heart and soul connection with someone.
Life is hard and goodbyes are painful but we have to bear them with optimism for positive tomorrow. I wish your daughter can recover from this as soon as possible

  32. Dear Karen, so sorry to read about the loss of Peanut. She sounds like a tiny dog with a big personality!
We got our very first dog about two and a half years ago and our second one about year later and we have not been through loosing a dog yet, but I know it will hurt so much to let them go no matter when that time will come.
So I deeply sympathize with you and your daughter. But as you said all we can do is to stitch our broken hearts together and be grateful to have had them in our lives.
    Warm regards,
    Christina

  35. Dearest Karen,

I am so so terribly sad to learn this. I am weeping for you - oh our furry four-legged friends are truly family. I lost my Romeo kitty several years ago and find myself still looking for him, and some days so full of grief for losing him. They mark our hearts for life.

I am saying prayers for you and your family on this loss, as it is keenly felt, indeed. Hugs and friendship. ♥
