Season of Light

Hello, Dear Friends!

It's officially winter, here in the Pacific Northwest, and
the time of year when we celebrate Christmas,
Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.

I like to call it 'The Season of Light'.
Not only because we adorn our homes,
businesses, and outdoor spaces with beautiful,
twinkling lights, but we also celebrate the bringing of enlightenment
to mankind.

It's so symbolic of how we look to a higher power
to bring us light and hope during our darkest hours.
xx

We also celebrate the beauty of nature and its many gifts
when we decorate the tree and adorn our homes with
bows of evergreens, holly, pinecones and winter berries.

It's so peaceful to sit in front of a warm fire
with the glow of candlelight and the twinkling of
the Christmas tree, reminding us of how very
fortunate we are to have a cozy home and
presents under the tree.

It is only through grace that we have these circumstances,
when so many do not, and we should never take
this for granted.

We owe our very existence to the generosity
and wisdom of nature to provide us
with a home, sustenance, heat, and water.
This is also something we should never take for
granted. We need to take care of this
beautiful planet that so gracefully provides
us a home.

"All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all."

- Cecil Frances Alexander -
1818-1895

Kai agrees.
Although he just wants one little bite of
those deer that insist on roaming through
his territory. Just a little nip, but Mama says, 'No!'
xx

Aw! Sorry Kai!

A rare ray of sunshine.

As you might be aware, here in Washington State
we have had some very severe storms with
destructive flooding and slides, recently.

We were fortunate here, on our little mountain,
and suffered no damage.

Many families were not so fortunate, though.
Again, through grace, there was no loss of life.

My youngest son, Dustin and wife, Jen, took
a wonderful cruise around the Mediterranean
this year.
One of their stops was in Turkey, where they visited
the home of Mother Mary in her final years.
They brought me back this lovely memento.

I've kept my decorations simple this year.
Just a few of my favorite things.

Delicious appetizer from Daughter-in-law, Erica.

The Mr. and I hosted the family for an early
Christmas celebration the weekend before.

I cooked a glazed ham, and we had delicious, scalloped potatoes
that my daughter, Heather brought. I also served a green salad
with pear, cranberries and walnuts, rolls and apple sauce.
I baked a spice bundt cake with sugared cranberries for dessert.

We had lots of appetizers, cookies, mimosas and hot chocolate.

We managed to corral the grand boys long enough
to take a quick photo!
We even got them to smile!
Usually, it is at least one that makes a funny face :)

Last year's photo with Santa. Lol!

Of course, we were missing one this year.
Our youngest, Jack, who is now enjoying Hawaiian life.

Wreaths I made at the annual wreath-making party
my daughter-in-law Jen hosts.

The Mister's workshop.

A pretty sunrise out my window.

Snow in the foothills.

Driving over Snoqualmie pass on our way to our son, Gabe's house
for thanksgiving.

Morning sunrise.

I know it has been a while since I have connected with you,
my dear friends.
I accidently got locked out of my computer and
needed my son to come and fix it for me.
I am not tech savvy!
He lives over an hour away, and has been very busy,
so, I had to wait a while. Turns out, I could've just called him,
and he could've taken care of it over the phone.
Oh, well. Anyway, here I am and I promise to be more present.
I have missed you!
xx

Do you have any New Year's resolutions?
Mine is to slow down and enjoy life more.
It's been a busy year and I will fill you in on
all that has been going on in my future posts.

Wishing you a wonderful 'Season of Light',
and many blessings in the coming New Year!
xxoo

  1. Oh, I would love to see the home of Mother Mary. How special that your son visited, and brought you back that special piece. She fills my heart every day. Your Christmas decorations are very nice; I like the bunch of cinnamon sticks. The pine cone with the green tips is delightful. A sweet picture of the grandsons. Your spiced cake with sugared cranberries looks Yummy. What a wonderful dessert at Christmastime. I like the scene you made with the trees and deer. They are roaming around lately in the neighborhood, and I love to see them. I hope the new year is a good one for me and you, Karen. I have appreciated our friendship throughout the years.

  3. Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Christmas and Happy New Year all in one go!! Lovely to hear from you and see all your beautiful celebrations in glorious sunshine with just the right amount of snow on the mountains. It's a nightmare getting children to smile at the same time and it doesn't get any easier when they are older either! We had a great traditional Christmas in the cold, our daughter in Australia in the heat and the ocean but we came together online, one thing we are very grateful to have , you must have missed not having your computer. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2026. x

  5. Good to hear you were able to get the computer fixed without any trouble, I am not tech savy either, don't know what I will do if hubby goes first.
I too don't take anything for granted, so many people have lost their homes in the past year with Tornadoes, fires, mudslides, hurricanes it is just crazy. We just had a bad day yesterday and last night but thankfully our home is ok but others just to the north of us had tornadoes go through, unheard this time of year.
Wow I can't get over how your grandsons are growing, time sure does fly. Good to see you were able to get together and enjoy celebrating the birth of Jesus! Wishing you a Happy New Year!

  6. Yay! A beautiful post from my dear Karen. What a Christmas gift! Your celebration looked lovely and sounded delicious! That cake was stunning! I love picking a word for the year - not so much as a resolution...but more of an affirmation for how I want to view the next year and the things I hope to do in it. 😊🌟 A flies by so quickly - so definitely slowing down and being more present is always a good idea in my book. Your grandsons are so adorable and getting so big 😍 I always love seeing your gorgeous corner of the world. So happy to hear everyone was ok through the scary flooding. Yes, we need to treasure and care for this precious planet far better than we do! Wishing you and the Mr and all of your family a peaceful and very joyous 2026! ❤️💚🌟 😘

  11. Oops. I either lost my comment or hit send and you moderate! So I'll start again. It gave me a tremendous lift to see your blog again after so long and to step into your beautiful home at the holidays. I loved every single adorable vignette (especially the deer) and your fabulous trees, the candy canes in the white stoneware, the wreaths, your festive front door! And your pre-Christmas celebration sounds spectacular, surrounded by most of your family and oh! That food sounds fabulous. You cannot bea scalloped potatoes and ham and the cake is a beauty.

I have no resolutions as such but a list of do-more, do-less. We'll see how that goes. My wish for the new year is more peace, more ease in the world and our country. A preserved environment, more time with friends and of course, good health an happiness to all. I will look forward to your upcoming posts!

  13. Hi Karen. Glad to see you back. Isn't it terrible when something happens to our computers and we are at a loss as to how to fix it. Happens to me more than I care to admit. Some are telling me they are not getting notice of when I post now and I don't know why. Your Christmas looks so beautiful on your mountain. It must seem like Christmas every day. I hope this new year is kind to all of us and that we will all have good health and peace and joy. Happy New Year, my friend..xxoJudy
